IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Retardation)

This is a condition in which the fetus is not growing as it should be. An ultrasound may show that the baby is small for gestational age. This may be caused by several factors such as: problems with placenta, maternal drug usage, cigarette smoking, maternal diabetes, high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, or anemia.

Waiting less than 6 months to have another child, may increase your risk for IUGR because you are still recovering from the last pregnancy.

Things to do:

  • Bed rest (at home or hospital)
  • Improve eating habits (increase protein, calories and iron)
  • Stop drug usage (includes street drugs, alcohol and tobacco)
