Pregnancy - What to take to the hospital

Before time for labor, you will need to get a few items prepared to take to the hospital. These things will make the hospital stay and labor experience more relaxing and pleasant.

Things to take for the birthing room:

  • Tennis ball (for back labor)
  • Lotion (if you want a massage)
  • Music (may irritate some women)
  • Video Camera/camera with film (if you want video or pictures)
  • Hard candies to suck on (some hospitals do not allow)
  • Ponytail holder (if you have long hair)
  • Something for a focal point
  • Anything personal to make you feel more comfortable

What to take for the coach (partners):

  • Light throw blanket (in case labor is long)
  • Coins for vending machine
  • List of phone numbers (have him call)

General Items to take for after giving birth:

  • Comfortable night gowns that you do not mind if blood gets on
  • Socks or slippers
  • Baby book to fill in the birthing information (you will soon forget)
  • Nursing Bra's or Regular bra's
  • cosmetics, hair brushes, tooth paste, tooth brush, soap from home (if you break out with hotel type soaps), and deodorant.
  • Outfit to wear home (bring something that you wore during your fifth month)

Things for the newborn:

  • Going home outfit (have two outfits handy - one that is newborn and one that is 3 months size, you may have a small or big baby)
  • Outfits for 2 to 3 days unless you plan to let your baby wear the hospital type gown. (Check with your hospital to see if they allow you to dress your baby in clothes you bring).
  • Receiving blankets to wrap the baby
