Home Birthing

Women are now beginning to take more control over where their baby will be born. Some choose a local hospital, birthing center, or at their own home. Wherever you decide to have your baby is up to you, but the safest location may be at the hospital. The hospital is set up for childbirth and the complications that sometimes arise. They are equipped to handle emergencies whereas birthing centers and homes may not be.

Why some women choose to have their baby at home:

Some women are choosing to have their babies at home for various reasons. These reasons could be that they want a natural and comfortable environment during childbirth, they are afraid of hospitals, feel that hospitals are imposing on something very personal, or several other reasons.

What to have at home for a home birthing experience:

  • Sterilized towels
  • Sterilized water
  • Preferrably a doula (midwife)
  • Sterilized equipment to cut the umbilical cord
  • Umbilical tie off
  • Warming bed

If you decide to have a home birthing experience, make sure you have a backup plan in case something goes wrong. Have telephone numbers to local hospitals handy. After giving birth, have your baby examined at a local hospital or doctor's office.
