Placenta

After you give birth to your new baby, you will go into the Third Stage of labor and deliver the placenta. The placenta will usually come out about 5-20 minutes after the birth of your baby.

Normally the placenta comes out completely. Sometimes there may be a problem and the placenta may tear or partially come out of the uterus. The doctor may have to remove the remaining placenta by hand. If removal by the hand is not successful, you may have to have the placenta surgically removed. This will be kind of like a cesarean incision.
