Focal Point

A focal point during labor is a certain item or location in the room that you look at to take your mind of the pain of contractions or to encourage you during labor. Some women may have an item like a teddy bear or picture of a baby. Others may choose a certain spot on the ceiling or a picture in the birthing room.

Ideas for a focal point:

  • Picture taped to the ceiling
  • Favorite color (piece of material bought at fabric store)
  • Religious articles (like a cross)
  • Husbands eyes (stop moving!!!)

Basically, the focal point can be anything that you choose. The idea is to have something that you can think positively about and encourage you or distract your attention from the pain.
