Enema

A nurse or doctor performs an enema by placing a syringe into the rectum and flushing the digestive system with warm water. This causes the person to have loose bowel movements usually about 10 or 15 minutes after the procedure has been done. This will be similar to having diarrhea. For women who are being induced, this will help bring on contractions. For women who are already in labor, this may be an unwanted experience.

Why Do I have To Have an Enema?

This procedure is usually performed by doctors to ensure that the digestive system is cleared for childbirth. Neither they nor you want to have a bowel movement during labor. Although there has been some medical evidence that the bowels shut down while delivering. BUT I would rather not take the chance.

What If I Do Not Have an Enema?

If you do not have an enema performed, it is likely that you will have a bowel movement during the pushing stages of labor especially if you have an epidural or spinal block. When you have an epidural or spinal block, the control and sensations of the vaginal and rectal area are very minimal. So, you would not realize that you need or have already had a bowel movement.

Will It Hurt?

Getting an enema does not hurt. This procedure may feel uncomfortable because you may feel like you are going to use the bathroom while it is being done. Just relax and breath. Think to yourself that you will be able to go to the bathroom in just a few minutes.
