Amniocentesis (Amnio)

Amniocentesis is the procedure used to get the amniotic fluid around the baby and test it for any complications. It is done by the insertion of a needle into the abdomen around the 16th-18th week. Then the needle draws out some amniotic fluid. This procedure is usually recommended for women over 35 because of their increased chance in having a Down-Syndrome baby. This procedure does increase the risk of having a miscarriage.

An amnio can tell you the gender, all known chromosomal disorders and more than 200 single gene disorders.  

Warning Signs of a problem after having an amnio:

  • Any bleeding
  • Cramping
  • Contractions or pain in abdominal area

This calculator predicts ovulation dates based on the date of your last period and the length of your menstrual cycle. It provides approximate dates only. Having intercourse during the few days before ovulation will give you the best chance of becoming pregnant. Since sperm can survive for several days, keep in mind that these are not the only days to become pregnant.
